Why it matters

IPv4 protection does not automatically cover IPv6.

Dual-stack routing

A device can hold both protocols at once. If the VPN installs only IPv4 routes, an IPv6-capable destination may receive the ISP-issued IPv6 address.

Safe failure

If a VPN does not support IPv6, blocking external IPv6 while connected is usually safer than silently using the ordinary route. Retest after sleep and network changes.
